In the 2000 a second impact occured vaporizing Antartica and rasig the world's sea level by 60 meters. Half the world's population lost. Fifteen years later "Angels" wreak havok in Japan, in Tokyo 3. A special group known as NERV mobileizes their large mechas known as EVA's to combat the Angel's attacks. Three children are choosen to pilot the EVA's, Shinji Ikari, Rei Ayanami, and Soryu Asuka Langley.
